As has been mentioned in some lessons, we need to spend the rest of our budget for this ear so that LUSU don't reduce our funding in future. Place your suggestions for equipment or anything else you want the club to try and buy. Here are some I've thought of:
Resistance bands: These aren't that expensive and if we buy decent strength bands they can be used by everyone (perhaps in groups of about 3) during punching drills at the start of lessons. They will help develop faster and more powerful striking (as well as being fun to play with .
Thai boxing pads: These larger pads that cover the pad feeder's forearms can be used to drill combinations of punches and kicks, which are an element our lessons lack. Punches of varying number can be thrown and either the left or the right pad then dropped low so that the striker can practice kicking after or during flurries of punches. The pads can also be held across the body so that knees can be thrown when pulling an opponent's head down, as we see Sifu do quite a lot. These kinds of drills can't be performed with focus mitts as they do not offer adequate protection to the pad feeder whereas the larger Thai pads absorb much more force. Activities like those described above can be sped up and incorporate a lot of movement so as to act as a warm-up/conditioning exercise as well as coordination training.
Floor mats: As I mentioned in another post, I think it would be good if we use mats more often in lessons so that locks, throws or takedowns can be practiced safely. Most 'street' fights will end up on the floor at some point and we need to know how to deal with this. Unfortunately the kick-boxing mats are kept at the other end of campus and take ages to bring across to County South LT, so it would be useful to have our own if we can afford them.
Tell me what you think of these suggestions and please post your own. We'll need a meeting soon to decide exactly what the budget is to spent on (if you're reading this Jonny.... ;D)
