Crocodile strike
‘‘In sparring or fighting Keys are:
If your opponent doesn't move, then you do not move. If he moves a little, then you move first.’’ Taken from a private email to me from my Sifu Master Samuel Kwok.
The point that is being made here is very important. Wait until your opponent has begun to move and then attack. This has many advantages and I will list a few here. Firstly once your opponent has begun to move he will have set some sort of attack or approach in motion and has done so believing you are in a fixed position, so to move will confuse him but more importantly because he is moving, he will have to stop his planned movement and then respond to your attack, whereas had he been stationary he would have been able to react to you attack without having to first stop his own movement (or at least adjust it). This gives you an Advantage but also means that your opponent cant do such a thing to you.
My Sifu described it as being similar to the striking of a crocodile. A crocodile does not see like a human instead it responds to movement, when you move it strikes. You should do the same.
However in order to do this effectively you must have trained hard and be able to empty your mind of all its thoughts including thinking ‘when is he going to move’ instead you should remain calm and wait for your opponents movement then attack unhesitatingly, relying on your skill to get you through un harmed.
