Sil Lim Tao¡ªLittle Idea СÄîî^
Wing Chun¡¯s 1st Form
The first form contains the basic but essential hand movements of the Wing Chun system. The first form is important whatever level a practitioner you are. It Should be completed on a regular basis in an attempt to strive for perfection. The Form can be divided up into 3 sections for ease of learning each of which has a specific purpose.
''The first section: is for training the basic strength of the wrist and elbow. This strength, is in the formation of the major blocks of Tan Sau, Fook Sau and Wu Sau. If one wants to perform well in Wing Chun, one has to use the first section to train the basic power and strength. The hand movements travel forwards and backwards down your centerline very slowly using dynamic muscle tension. The shoulders and upper body must be relaxed, whilst you train the leg muscles against each other to form a solid foundation. [The first section also allows the practitionar to achive correct positioning with the 3 movements of tan, fook and wu sau, as they are performed slowly the corect positioning should be easlily achived]
The second section: teaches you how to correctly use the strength and power you trained in the first section. The usage of power in Wing Chun is half soft and half hard. For example when throwing a punch at your opponent the arm travels at grate speed but the muscles are relaxed, this is the soft part. But just before you make contact with your opponent, your muscles in your arm tense up for a split second, this is the hard part.
The third section: is for the basic hand movement training and to concentrate on executing each movement's position correctly. Movements include Pak Sau, Tan Sau, Gaun Sau, Huen Sau and Bong Sau.''
Master Samuel Kwok on the First form
Sil lim tao is always perfomed in the wing chun training stance which is used to develop streangth and power in the legs. Therefore the practitionar should sink their stance to ensure they are building the power in their legs while training their upper body with the movements of the form.
''When we learn English, we learn 26 letters first. If we cannot handle the pronunciation of each letter, then our English will never be good. The magnitude of the fist form Sil Lim Tao in Wing Csun is the same as that of the letters in English. If we don't master Sil Lim Tao well, we can never do well in Chum Kiu, Bil Gee and Muk Yan Jong (Wooden Dummy).
After learning 26 letters, we know how to form a word by grouping some of them. After learning Sil Lim Tao , Chum Kiu and Bil Gee, we know many methods of attack and defence. If we could practise Chi Sao by those methods, it would be the same as if we could make a proper sentence in English. If we could apply those methods in free fighting smoothly, then we could write a passage.''
